West coast spirit

Long time in the making

Against the relentless backdrop of wild Tasman Sea winds and black sands, Kariaotahi Beach Surf Life Saving Club has revealed a new Surf Life Saving clubhouse, finally delivering a safe, enduring hub on one of Auckland’s most treacherous shorelines. The new clubhouse comes after nearly two decades of anticipation and planning.

The original facility, battered and outgrown, had left volunteers watching every incoming storm with apprehension, unsure if the next gust would finally claim its tired roof. The new structure, which stands over twice the size of its predecessor, not only meets the functional demands of a busy coastal rescue station but expresses an architectural sensibility that is as robust as it is considerate of it's surroundings.

Structured to blend seamlessly with the distinctive west coast environment, the design uses sweeping forms and low-maintenance materials, ensuring it looks as though “it was always meant to be here” - a sentiment echoed by several generations of families deeply woven into the club’s fabric.

Performance and durability were non-negotiable considerations for the build, given the club’s exposure to extremes of wind, salt spray and summer heat. To meet the tough climate requirements, AGP’s high-performance Solux Ultra® was chosen throughout. Solux Ultra® delivers impressive solar control, insulation and durability, it is used alongside The AGP System® as the all-in-one option to maximise glazing.

Frame specification was equally uncompromising with Metro Series ThermalHeart+® delivering a contemporary profile and reliable weatherproofing, while allowing clean sightlines and excellent daylight transmission - a critical factor in providing surveillance over the dynamic beach environment.

Together, these two systems create a window and door solution that is optimised for volatile coastal conditions, compliant with all New Zealand Building Code energy-efficiency standards and delivering year-round comfort and clarity for the lifeguards and wider club community. This window system was supplied by Auckland Altherm fabricator, Premier Joinery.

With completion achieved both on time and under budget - a rare feat in modern construction - the project was able to return $300,000 to SLS Northern Region, a testament to both meticulous project management and the powerful sense of stewardship that characterises the Kariaotahi lifeguarding community.

The new Kariaotahi Surf Life Saving clubhouse, having set a new benchmark in both function and form, now stands not only as protection against the west coast’s infamous gales but as a testament to what is possible when architectural discipline, community vision and innovative engineering intersect. With strong links to families who are “in for life,” the clubhouse promises to be a haven and source of pride for many summers to come - and, in the view of many, establishes a new standard for Surf Life Saving design around the country.

Solux Ultra® is exclusively available through Altherm, First, and Vantage fabricators nationwide.
