H1 Performance
Adapting to New Zealand Building Code requirements
Are you across the change?
In recent years, New Zealand has introduced new minimum insulation requirements for homes under Clause H1 Energy Efficiency of the Building Code, rolled out in three stages. These updates support the country’s goal of achieving carbon net zero by 2050, with high-performance double glazing and thermally efficient window systems playing a crucial role.
The aim is clear: improve the energy efficiency of New Zealand buildings. The changes address wall, floor, and roof insulation, along with the thermal performance of glazing and joinery.
At AGP, we’re proud to be part of an evolving industry that embraces innovation to deliver warmer, drier, and healthier homes. In step with the code updates, our advanced glass solutions are designed and manufactured in New Zealand to meet and exceed thermal performance standards - helping builders, architects, and homeowners achieve outstanding results.
Six climate zones across New Zealand

From 3 November 2022, we moved from 3 climate zones to 6 to allow a more nuanced approach to climatic factors and window suitability. The zones are numbered from Zone 1 being the warmest climate, to Zone 6 in the coolest climate areas (as indicated on the map). All zones are now required to achieve a minimum R-Value (R0.46 for Zone 1-4, R0.50 for Zone 5-6).
So, what is an R-value?
R-values refer to a material's resistance to conductive heat flow, or thermal resistance. The higher the R-value, the better thermal resistance the product will provide.
Which products should be used?
Wherever you are in New Zealand, your project will exceed the Building Code requirements when you choose ThermalHeart+®, or Klima® uPVC joinery with The AGP System®.
What is ThermalHeart+®?
ThermalHeart+® is made up of three components, designed to work together as a high-performing complete window system.
- ThermalHEART® frames including a polyamide barrier insulates the frame of the window system, separating warm and cold areas
- The AGP System using AGP's Architectural Thermal Spacer®, argon gas, and your choice of Solux-E® or Solux Ultra® low emissivity coating
- Centrafix® Installation method which recesses the joinery into the building wall, aligning the insulation elements - wall, window frame, glazing
Available exclusively through Altherm, First, and Vantage, the ThermalHeart+® product range confidently exceeds H1 requirements for the ultimate in thermal efficiency. Learn more about ThermalHeart+® here.
Calculate your values
Upcoming changes to the Building Code mean the schedule method will no longer be a pathway for compliance by the end of 2025. With the calculation method set to become the main approach, we’ve created a simple reference table to make the process quicker and easier. You can work back from your target R-value or U-value, or calculate your project values by following your selected range and glass specification.
Having all the key numbers in one place saves time, reduces guesswork, and helps keep projects on track with the new requirements.
